Everything you will ever need to know about Roller Blinds

Roller Blinds can dramatically change the look and feel of a room whether it is at home or in the office. They are minimal and contemporary looking, they leave the whole space of your window clear when open and they come in many different fabrics, colours and patterns, they can even be a blackout blind. Roller Blinds use a minimal amount of fabric which lies flat against the window when closed and they let a maximum amount of light into a room when they are open as the blind rolls up into your window recess, not covering any of the window frame like other blinds can do.

What are roller blinds?

Roller Blinds Northumberland

A Roller Blind is a piece of fabric which wraps around a cylinder casing which fits into the top of your window frame and the casing can fit within or outside of your window recess. A Roller Blind is one whole piece of fabric that rolls up and down covering your entire window by a pull cord or side chain mechanism attached to the blind casing. Roller Blinds are a neat, contemporary and understated window dressing that can be used in any room in your home or business, including kitchens and bathrooms.

What are roller blinds made of?

Roller Blinds come in many different types of fabric, colours and patterns and can be tailor-made to your colour scheme and style of room. They can be made from easy-wipe, moisture proof, thermal and blackout material, creating a made to measure roller blind that’s perfectly suited to your space. Roller Blinds can also be fringed, tasselled, sequined and scalloped if you want to go for a really individual look. Avoid scrimping on cheap off the shelf Roller Blinds that aren’t made to measure as they won’t fit your window opening well and you will end up with gaps at the side that let the light in, the material will likely fade and or be thin and let the daylight in, and the pulleys tend to jam and tangle.

How do you open and close Roller Blinds?

Older Roller blinds are operated by a pull cord, however, newer Roller Blinds are opened and closed using a side chain mechanism attached to the blind casing which has a safety release feature so children are unable to harm themselves and get caught up in the pull cord mechanism.

What material do roller blinds come in?

There are hundreds of different fabrics available for Roller Blinds so you really can make them look an integral part of your room, decor and style.

When choosing your fabric you firstly need to decide how much light you want to come into the room. Do you want as much light as possible, or do you need your room to be as dark as possible?

Standard Fabric: These are the most common fabrics available. There are a huge range of colours and designs available for you to choose from and are an ideal choice if you want to keep your room bright but still have a level of privacy. Before you decide on your fabric always hold the sample up to a window to see how much light actually shines through.

Dimout Fabric: This type of fabric is also known as Energy Saving Fabric or Thermal Fabric. It is a fabric with a silver reflective coating added to the back that will reduce the glare compared to a standard fabric. The reflective coating works really well to reduce heat from windows and in conservatories where there is a lot of direct sunlight. They are also a sensible option for rooms with TVs and computer screens as the suns glare can often be a problem. This fabric still allows some light to enter the room.

Blackout Fabrics: A blackout fabric reduces the light from entering the room and are mainly used for bedrooms so you get no light coming through the fabric itself in the mornings. Be aware though you will still get some light from the gaps at the sides, however, made to measure blinds will minimise this and will be only millimetres.

Waterproof Fabrics: Waterproof fabrics are made of a PVC type material and they are perfect for kitchens and bathrooms where there tends to be more moisture and the possibility of splashes marking the blinds. They are really easy to wipe clean, keeping them looking fresh and new for a whole lot longer than standard fabric. They can also come in blackout fabrics so are a good option for children’s bedrooms too.

Pollergen Fabrics: If you or your family suffer from hay-fever then these special fabrics reduce the effects of pollen during the summer months and are specially treated to do this.

What colours do roller blinds come in?

You name the colour and you will be able to get a made to measure Roller Blind to fit your decor and style. They are also great blinds for patterned fabrics as they lie flat against the window showing off the complete pattern, making them a real statement in your room.

Can you buy off the shelf roller blinds?

You can buy off the shelf roller blinds, however, there are disadvantages to doing this:

  • You won’t often find an off the shelf Roller Blind that fits your window perfectly
  • The fabric quality is not always as good
  • You won’t get the choice in colours and patterns as you will from a made to measure blind
  • You won’t get the choice of fabric to suit the room it is being fitted in and the use it will get
  • You will have to fit it yourself which can end in disaster. Using a well known and reputable blind company to have your blinds made should include a free fitting service too, taking away the stress and hassle of fitting a blind that may not fit your window perfectly anyway
